Small Niche Businesses
You Are Leaders, Whether You Like It or Not!

Let’s put it right. If you’re running a small niche business and you don’t feel confident calling yourself a leader, you’re not alone. In fact, you’re in the company of thousands of brilliant yet humble entrepreneurs and business owners who somehow believe they need an eight-figure income or an MBA to wear the leadership hat. Spoiler alert: you don’t.
Here’s the thing. Leadership isn’t about having the biggest bank account or the fanciest title. It’s about influence, vision, and impact. And if you’re running a small business, especially in a niche market, you’ve already got those in spades. Let’s explain why you should embrace your inner leader and how to get past the hurdles holding you back.
The Confidence Conundrum
Many small business owners think they can’t be leaders because they’re not “great at business.” Maybe you’re more passionate about your craft than about balancing the books. Guess what? That’s okay. Being a leader doesn’t mean being perfect at everything. It means knowing your strengths, owning them, and surrounding yourself with people who complement your weaknesses.
Take the imposter syndrome and give it the boot. Leadership isn’t about being flawless, it is resilience, adaptability, and willingness to learn. So, you’re not a financial wizard? Big deal. Find a good accountant and focus on what you do best.
The Money Myth
The myth is that you need to be rolling in dough to be a leader. This is a classic case of confusing financial success with leadership potential. Sure, having money can make some things easier, but it’s not a prerequisite for leadership.
Leadership is about vision and inspiration. You’re already leading if you’ve got a clear idea of where you want your business to go and can motivate others to join you on that journey. Your income doesn’t determine your ability to inspire and guide others. Look up Abraham Lincoln, Nelson Mandela, and Mahatma Gandhi. Probably had poorer backgrounds than you…
Practical Leadership Tips for the Reluctant Leader
- Own Your Expertise: You started your business for a reason. You know your niche better than anyone else. Embrace that expertise and let it fuel your confidence. People look up to you because you’re the go-to person in your field.
- Focus on Impact: Leadership is about making a difference. Think about the impact your business has on your customers and community. Are you providing unique products or services that bring joy or solve problems? That’s leadership in action.
- Cultivate a Growth Mindset: Don’t get bogged down by what you don’t know. Instead, focus on what you can learn. Leadership is a journey, not a destination. Commit to continuous improvement and stay curious.
- Build a Support Network: Surround yourself with people who can help you grow. This includes mentors, peers, and even your employees. A strong support network can provide guidance, feedback, and encouragement.
- Communicate Openly: Good leaders communicate effectively. Share your vision, goals, and challenges with your team and customers. Open communication builds trust and fosters a sense of community.
- Celebrate Small Wins: Leadership isn’t just about big achievements. Celebrate the small victories along the way. Recognise your progress and use it as motivation to keep pushing forward.

The Humour in Humility
Now, let’s not forget to lighten up a bit. Humility is a great trait in a leader, but don’t let it become self-deprecation. You might be leading a business that caters to medieval re-enactment enthusiasts or vegan dog treat aficionados, but that doesn’t make your leadership any less valid or important.
Embrace the quirks of your niche and use them to your advantage. Make your leadership style as unique as your business. After all, who says leadership has to be boring? If you can lead a team while rocking a chainmail suit or concocting the perfect pumpkin spice dog biscuit, you’ve got a leadership edge that’s both memorable and effective.
The Bottom Line
Step up and recognise your worth. You don’t need to be perfect, wealthy, or traditionally business-savvy to be a leader. You need to be you—passionate, dedicated, and ready to make a difference.
And, as a small business it’s vital to have a community – and to do that well, you need leadership.
Remember, leadership isn’t about a title or a bank balance. It’s about influence, vision, and impact. And if you’re running a small business, you’ve already got what it takes.
